DIY Fringe Garland Decor

As you may know, we are currently working through the re-do of our daughters’ bedroom and I shared all about what is inspiring us for their new space right here. Well, this weekend was a slow one and the perfect time to create their DIY fringe garland decor that is now hanging above each of their beds. My girls love projects and they were excited to dive in with me.

We started with pulling together the fabric we were going to use. My goal was to make sure it not only had a girly sense to it all, but that we added a bit of rough denim to it for a touch of tomboy. I have a tomboy and I have a more girly-girl so my goal with their space is to marry both styles in the best way I can. The denim I have had on hand for awhile and it comes from the end of the school year project we do every summer. You can read all about that here. I then pulled two dresses from my closet that haven’t been worn in far too long and were going to be donated anyway. The combination of the three turned out to be just what we were looking for!

I then got to work cutting 2″ strips out of each fabric option. You’ll want to make sure you have a good pair of fabric scissors on hand for this part. The length is completely up to you and how long you want your fringe garland to hang. As I cut, my girls worked at placing each piece in it’s own separate pile by type of fabric so we knew how much we had of each.

Once we had the fabric prepped, I then used jute twine and measured it to match the length of the headboards. We knew they would be trimmed down, but the extra length ensured we had room to trim. We wanted to keep it really simple and easy so from there we started a pattern that we liked and we would then tie each strip of fabric to the twine with one simple knot – much like you would start tying your shoe.

The denim does fray, but instead of cleaning it up and trimming the strays, we decided we preferred the rough look next to the lace and soft pink so we left it as is. Once we had both made for each of the girls, we then grabbed Dad to help us get them centered and hung over each of their headboards. We used 2 small nails on either side to do this which we will then paint the same color as their wall so you don’t even notice the nail there.

All in all, I think it’s a beautiful touch of something handmade for their bedroom and the girls enjoyed getting to create something for their space. We had a blast doing this and I will continue to share in the process as we complete their bedroom re-do and give them a space they absolutely love. Happy Monday, friend!
