Designing for Small Spaces and Our Temporary Living Room

We are six weeks into our adventure here in beautiful Nashville, Tennessee and we are already feeling right at home. From all of the local fun, we have been enjoying getting settled into our church family and our community. Nashville has truly been everything we were hoping it would be. As the excitement and exhaustion of moving across the country are wearing off I am feeling the itch to start really getting settled. I thought I would share about designing for small spaces and our temporary living on since this will be the first thing we tackle. Because let’s be honest, we can only enjoy family time on the floor for so long. Haha.

P.S. If you follow me on Instagram, you can catch the full home tour of our sweet and small space right here.

We have a decent sized space to work with and while it is temporary my goal is to find pieces that I absolutely love. This is so they can be moved to our future home with us. No sense in buying temporary furniture when we have a home to be preparing financially for, right?

With seven of us, I want to really try and maximize the space to get plenty of seating and comfort without making it feel that we are suddenly claustrophobic from too much furniture. The goal is to keep it spacious yet functional for our large family.

Jarett came across this piece and had the thought of creating our own unique piece to fill in the wall the TV is mounted on. Our approach would be much less modern and a bit more farmhouse, but with how wonderful our DIY headboard turned out, I am so excited to design this next piece with him and the boys.

(No judgements on my drawing, OK? Haha!)

With that upcoming project filling out the wall to the right, I have been planning out what to do with the rest of the room. Here is what I am working with to give you a visual…

I would love to find a decent sized sofa and then add two additional sitting chairs to create more seating as well as a conversational space. After doing some online browsing, the idea of these sitting chairs from Wayfair seems awesome since they are a discreet recliner as well. Score!

I was able to bring the area rug we purchased last year which I think will still go great with the overall style. And then I love the idea of adding a sideboard/credenza. This would be behind the couch and against the wall to add additional storage and also be a great base to a gallery wall.

And I have a LIST of pieces I am keeping my eye on. This faux leather tufted sofa is totally the right price and a style that would work with what I want. However, I still need to check it out in person to get a feel for the quality. Anyone have good experiences with the furniture from At Home? I haven’t purchased anything from them before so I am curious for sure. This coffee table from Pottery Barn is a great shape for a smaller space so I am on the lookout for a copycat version perhaps. And I just purchased some of these pillows I found on Amazon – LOVE.

This room along with every other one is being done on a budget because hello, just left a job and moved across the country – wink! So I love that we are going to build out our own piece for the TV wall and I also will be on the lookout for used pieces maybe to upcycle as well as sales. And it is always interesting designing for small spaces and our temporary living room will be the hardest for sure, but I am excited to get it filled in and feeling more and more like home for the time being. I’ll be sharing more as it happens!

What is your approach to home design and decor? Do you like thrifting and DIY or do you prefer getting exactly what you want where you know you can find it?
