Casual Friday: Creating Comfort & A Quilt Obsession

Happy Friday! Diving into another edition of Casual Friday! We are chatting all about creating comfort and a quilt obsession I have. Previously, I have shared about how much I am wanting to add an immense amount of comfort and cozy to our home for the fall and winter season. And I think there are a few reasons for this. One, I struggle during the winter. Do you deal with seasonal blues at all? I definitely do and I know that when I take the time and energy to pour into our home and amp up the level of comfort? It makes all the difference during those months we spend so much time inside.

Last season I was a bit overwhelmed with getting used to a new normal for our family and it was a tough winter. This year? Not gonna happen again! Also, rebuilding after leaving everything in Arizona has been a slow going process. Just about six months being here the world shut down and we opted out of all of the propaganda. Shopping in the stores? No thank you. Then came last summer (if you are new, you can read about my daughter’s diagnosis here) and you know? It just feels like our home, even though temporary, has continued to be put on the back burner. And I am just now feeling like the tides have turned and I am so excited darn excited about it.

So, about this quilt obsession…

I don’t know. This might stem from my obsession with Jane Powell and those skirts of hers. There is just something about quilts that I have always adored though. Perhap it’s the history of them, the style of them, but I feel like they just exude the spirit of home. And whenever we are rummaging local shops here in Tennessee or out at a market and I see handmade quilts? I instantly have a smile draped across my face. They just make me happy.

My goal is to start collecting some. Nothing beats a handmade quilt and while I don’t need a ton, I would love just a few to add to our home.

Some quilt finds I wanted to make sure and share!

HANDMADE FINDS ON ETSY:

This star patchwork one is gorgeous.

This Etsy shop, Bluegrass Quilts, has some of my absolute favorite and simple designs. This one is perhaps my favorite.

The colors in this one are so cozy!

NOT HANDMADE, BUT STILL THAT BEAUTIFUL QUILT FEEL:

This Laura Ashley one I purchased earlier this month and I can’t wait to share more about it. It’s beautiful in person!

While this isn’t a traditional approach, I loved the quilts I found at Pendelton. This ‘Goose Lake’ quilt set is such a good one.

The ‘Stillwater Floral’ quilt from Schoolhouse would be darling for a girls room!

Love this classic ticking stripe one from Red Land Cotton.

June has this patchwork one which is beautiful!

This Eddie Bauer one over on Amazon is such a great option!

Adding extra comfort at home for the fall and winter season.

There’s something about this time of year especially that always puts my focus on home and how it feels inside of it. I recently shared the following quote on social media earlier this week and I think it sums up all of my thoughts in the best way:

I’m sure we are not alone on this, but our family is in a season of preparedness. There is peace of mind that comes with that. So while my focus is not on consuming, it is on curating. There’s a big difference in the two. Because I want that for my family – to be able to melt into the comfort of home. There is such soul healing in that. To leave the outside world behind and truly feel the spirit of home and the nourishment it brings.

So, how am I adding extra comfort at home for the upcoming seasons?

The first way is through layers and textures. For me, this is going to be adding throw blankets throughout our space, sprinkling throw pillows around, and adding coverlets and quilts on beds. It’s tucking away the lighter layers to bring in knits and heavier linens to add warmth. I also would love to finally add curtains to each of the bedrooms for added texture and layers. And not to mention, finally replacing the living room rug (ahem, Millie).

The second way is through smells. I am obsessed with making our home smell amazing. Like, on the same level of walking in the door from church on Sunday and smelling a roast in the crock pot! We ditched candles several years back to rid our home of synthetic fragrances. I love the vibe that diffusing brings to our home and the fact that I can create all of the same smells I used to love from my favorite candles.

Hope you found some inspiration from this edition of Casual Friday!
