Decorating Early for the Holidays Brings More Joy & Less Stress

I know what you’re probably thinking. It’s barely mid-November, and here I am with a fully decked-out Christmas tree and totes of decor getting ready to be pulled from their slumber in order to deck the halls. Cue the gasps, the “isn’t it too early?” comments, and the side-eyes from the purists who swear by December 1st being the official starting bell to all things Christmas. But hear me out: decorating early has become my secret weapon for reclaiming the holidays—and there’s nothing better than a festive, calm December filled with more memories and less madness. As I have navigated the years I have come to learn that decorating early for the holidays brings more joy and less stress.

For us mothers and homemakers (and really anyone carrying the title of “magic maker” in the family), the holiday season can quickly turn from a time of joy to a month-long marathon of to-do lists. The decorations, the shopping, the perfect holiday gatherings—we are the ones who make that magic happen, often at the expense of our own peace, sanity, and even presence in actually enjoying the moments that we worked so hard to cultivate the most beautiful atmosphere for. So, a few years back, I decided to approach the holidays differently: I would start decorating for Christmas in November. Not just November, but the first of November—as soon as little ones have hopped out of their Halloween costumes. And let me tell you, it’s brought a whole new level of luxury—a sort of quiet luxury, if you will—to the season. Here’s why…

Wearing the hat of “Magic Maker”

It’s a title that sounds whimsical, but let’s be honest—being the “magic maker” comes with a whole lot of fine print: it’s the planning, the organizing, and somehow keeping the chaos in check. And while it can definitely feel like a full-time job, I genuinely love wearing this hat all year long, but especially during the holidays. From the decorations to the family traditions, it’s about creating an experience—one twinkling light at a time. And decorating early lets me actually savor this role instead of sprinting (and nearly collapsing from the stress) through it.

I’ll admit it—I love getting things “just right.” Call it a reformed perfectionist thing. But for me, it’s not about the Pinterest-perfect version of Christmas. It’s about understanding that the memories and traditions we create during the holidays are the ones we carry with us for a lifetime. Starting my decorating in November gives me the time and space to approach the season with intention, instead of scrambling to keep up with the whirlwind that December tends to bring. (There’s actually an entire blueprint I follow beginning in August. Don’t worry, I put all of my best secrets to a simple and stress-free holiday season in this free guide).

By the time December rolls around, my home is festive, my kids are thrilled, and I’m channeling my inner Martha Stewart with just the right mix of confidence and calm. And the best part? I get to be present with my family, soaking in the magic right alongside them, instead of melting down because I didn’t manage to check every box on an unrealistic to-do list.

The Quiet Luxury of Simplicity

Let’s talk about what “quiet luxury” actually means when it comes to the holiday season. Spoiler: it’s not about perfectly coordinated décor or a packed calendar of holiday events. It’s something far more meaningful—the luxury of actually enjoying the moments and memories you’re creating as the magic maker in your home.

There’s truly a quiet luxury in being able to sit back and soak it all in: the laughter of your kids, the glow of the Christmas tree, the scent of cookies baking. It’s about embracing the season without constantly sprinting from one errand to the next and juggling an endless list of to-dos to make all the magic happen. Decorating early and simplifying my approach gives me space to breathe, to be present, and to savor the time with my family.

For me, this single aspect and reformed approach to the holidays has transformed December from chaos to calm. It’s not about doing less but about doing things better and focusing on what truly matters—whether that’s a quiet movie night with my kids or baking cookies without the pressure of everything else looming over me. The real magic? It’s in the moments I now get to enjoy instead of just orchestrating.

A Few Simple + Intentional Tips for Early Decorating

If you are thinking that this might be one way you can reclaim your holidays, here are a few tips to decorating early and how to keep it simple, intentional, and stress-free:

  • Start Small and Layer in Decor: If going full-on festive in November feels like a leap, start small. Add twinkle lights here, a wreath there, and slowly ease into it. You’ll find that a few early touches create a cozy vibe. For example, I put our tree up at the beginning of November and add in the white lights, but we don’t decorate it as a family until December 1st.
  • Incorporate Natural Elements: Holiday decor doesn’t have to scream “Christmas”. Try adding natural elements like pine branches, berries, candles for ambiance, or a few neutral ornaments as a filler in a decorative bowl. This way, your home transitions beautifully from fall and Thanksgiving to winter and Christmas without a complete overhaul.
  • Create a Holiday Prep Calendar: If you’re already organizing your decor early, you might as well create a loose calendar for the other holiday tasks. Gift buying, baking, and wrapping can all get planned out. That way, your December is free for what really matters—time with the people you love. Reclaiming the Holidays with Intentional Choices

For me, reclaiming the holiday season has been about figuring out what’s actually worth the effort—and what’s just noise. After years of losing myself in the chaos of the holiday season, I decided to opt out of the stress. Does this mean I’m now that person—the one who decorates early and unintentionally triggers anyone clutching their Thanksgiving turkey like a holiday purist? Absolutely. I’m unapologetically the person with twinkling lights in November and a grin on my face.

But here’s the thing: instead of running myself into the ground trying to create all of the festive magic, I’m finally enjoying a holiday season that’s calm, intentional, and packed with the moments that matter most while also getting to make all of that festive magic happen. Turns out, Christmas music sounds just as good in mid-November, especially when you’re not panicking over a mounting to-do list. Who knew.

So, if the holiday rush has you feeling more frazzled than festive, maybe it’s time to give an early start a shot and discover how decorating early for the holidays brings more joy and less stress. Consider this your permission slip to reset the holiday hustle and actually savor the season. And who knows… you might just find yourself humming along to Jingle Bells without the stress-induced eye twitch.

I’d love to know—are you team early decor or team wait-until-December? And what do you do to make the holiday season less chaotic and more meaningful? I’d love to hear your tips for a holiday filled with magic and calm!
