Weekend projects are the best, aren’t they? We had a good time with this simple DIY hat rack for the boys room. And this specific DIY was all Tanner. He has taken an extreme interest in wood crafting and creating, building, and restoring. So much so that he decided to add it as one of his high school course credits.  So each month we tackle a project and this first one was a hat rack for the boys room. Tanner has curated quite the collection of hats and wanted to solve the problem of where to put them. So we got to work!

Step 01:

Using 2×6’s, we decided on the space we wanted them to hang and the size we needed to fill it appropriately. Then we cut each to that specified length.

Step 02:

We then went through the tedious work of measuring out exactly where the hooks would go on each board. We then pre-drilled the holes and then sanded each board to a smooth finish.

Step 03:

Tanner decided he wanted a white finish to the hat rack so we went with a General Finishes milk paint in antique white.

Step 04:

Once the first coat of paint dried, we then lightly sanded it before adding a second coat. This helps the finish to be extra smooth.

Step 05:

We then added these simple farmhouse hooks using the pre-drilled holes.

Step 06:

Then we added sawtooth hangers to the back of each board.

Step 07:

Then it was time to drill where the DIY hat racks would hang and add anchors.

The finished look was perfect for the space. Simply, classic, and alleviated a problem and added necessary organization. 

Could we have purchased this same type of wall rack from a local big box store? I’m almost positive. However, there was so much learning and teaching that went on that made it all the more priceless. Watching Tanner make the design decisions, helping him problem solve, and teaching him how to approach specific things when it comes to projects. And nothing beats seeing his face light up overseeing an idea come to fruition. He told us after wrapping up this DIY hat rack that he is now addicted to DIY projects. And I am totally OK with that! Ha!

And of course, I had to see this corner of their room fully filled. I found this fantastic woven bench and throw pillow at TJ Maxx and they were perfect!
