If you are a mom of an athlete you know where I am going with this post. From cleats to pads, things can get kind of funky and goodness knows we need some tricks up our sleeves to combat it. I wanted to make sure and share with you what I found to really work and that is also non-toxic with no harsh chemicals – a DIY non-toxic sports odor eliminator spray. I have shared before that our family has been working to ditch unhealthy products and ingredients and I wanted to make sure that what I use to clean our athletes’ sports equipment was as safe as possible.
With a few ingredients, this DIY spray is super easy to make and gets the job done. Because this recipe includes peppermint oil, I do not use it on any headgear such as helmets. The reason is that I want to avoid it getting into the eyes when sweating starts. So I use this spray on cleats, shoes, shoulder pads, shin guards, and anything else that is not being worn on the head.
You will want to get a spray bottle (You can find the ones I purchase over on the wellness section of my Amazon affiliate page here) and the recipe for the spray is as follows:
To make sure I can still rid helmets of odor while also sanitizing and keeping things clean, I love using our Thieves household cleaner. I have shared previously about this before and how great the switch has been from toxic junk we used to grab from the store to plant-based and an all-natural option to handle all the things – bathrooms, floors, bathtubs, kitchen grease, countertops, windows, mirrors, even our car interiors. And the best part? No hacking, coughing, gagging, and keeping little ones away because of fumes and un-safe ingredients. We have loved it and it comes in super handy for football helmets. Who knew?!
I simply spray onto a towel or rag and wipe down the interior of Tanner’s helmet really good. Doing this has absolutely kept things clean, sanitized, and deodorized.
To dilute the Thieves household cleaner concentrate you will want to use a 16 oz. spray bottle and take the following two steps:
Clean away, my friend!
