One of the reasons I love this time of year is the kick-off it is to several months of festive fun. Festive fun that involves some of our best family traditions and memories. What’s not to love?! We had a blast with this one and wanted to share it with you – a floating witch hat craft for the kids. So you and your family can enjoy some festive fun in your own home and make some memories.
A little reel that the kiddos had fun putting together – wink!

Let’s begin with the supplies you will need to make it happen. Now, we all know that you could simply purchase black witch hats and hang them for the floating effect we all have seen others do for their seasonal decor. However, we would miss out on the paint, and the glitter, and the smiles on the little one’s faces as they have our blessing in getting a little dirty. I adore what arts and crafts does for the kids and the joy it brings to our home. And before we know it these days will be gone so I say, dive in with them, mama. Embrace the mess because it is so worth it.
(You can find these at your local stores, but I also made sure to add them to my Amazon affiliate page in case that makes life easier for you)
First, you will paint your paper plate on the front and back. This will be the base of your witch hat.
We found that adding the glitter before the paint dries is the perfect way to apply it.
Then you will tackle painting your party hat and then do the same thing – sprinkle on the glitter before your paint is completely dry.
We decided to use fishing weights to anchor the top of the hat in order to have them hang better since the assembled hat ends up being very light on its own.
Once your pieces are dry, you will simply take one end of your fishing line and tie the fishing weight to it. You will then take the other end of your line and feed it through the top of your party hat. Make sure to do this step before glueing it to the paper plate. You will pull the line all the way through until your weight is at the very top of your party hat.
Then proceed with gluing the party hat to the paper plate.
Then I had Jarett insert small eye hooks into the ceiling where we wanted the hats to hang. You will then simply want to string your fishing line to the height you want your hat to hang.
How darling is that?! So simple and fun. The kids and I had a blast doing these and they love seeing them hanging up in our home. It’s just the right amount of festive for them and neutral enough for me to love them just as much – wink!
I hope your family gets a chance to enjoy this floating witch hat craft for the kids – let me know how you all enjoy it!
