If you are a parent you know how crazy the laundry game can get. When we found out last January that there would soon be another little human joining our pack, I knew I had to implement an easy system in order to get this area of life organized and running systematically a little more than it was currently. Fast forward to last summer and the system we put in place has done wonders! So today I want to make sure and share all about laundry organization and system with kids. Keep scrolling and let me walk you through it!

In our home, genders share rooms right now. So both our boys are in one bedroom and our girls share another. Each room has one laundry basket for both kids to use. The kids also store a mesh laundry bag behind their baskets and whenever their basket is full, they are expected to transfer their laundry from their basket to the bag to be taken downstairs.

Why the mesh bag? Because I wanted this step to be easy no matter what age was doing it. The metal laundry baskets can get a bit heavy when full and let’s be honest – the baskets, if taken downstairs, would leave marks and holes in my walls with kids carrying them around, be left downstairs without being returned to their spot in bedrooms and I could even see injuries happen with how crazy these kids can get sometimes.

Also, if it’s one of the littles turn to take the bag downstairs and it’s too heavy, they can simply place it at the top of the stairs and kick it down without needing help.

We are currently living the rental life and our laundry room is your average, run-of-the-mill laundry room without a whole lot of space. I needed to find something that would keep the laundry chaos at bay as well as help implement a system that the kids could follow to alleviate some of the work on my end.

I found this laundry station and set it up with labels for each of the three baskets – whites, darks and towels.

Once the kids have their laundry bag downstairs they are then expected to sort their own laundry between the three baskets. Once they are done, they take their mesh bags right back to their rooms to use for the next round when needed.

From there, I take over. This is to ensure that clothing is getting washed correctly and getting put away appropriately. I do have them help alongside me when putting away and so they know where things go, but I handle the bulk of it.

A few tips that I have picked up in handling laundry this way and to make it as seamless as possible are:

• DO NOT DO LAUNDRY IN BULK. Trust me, I have tried this way and it is miserable. To think that I have to sacrifice an entire day JUST to one chore makes me ill. And when you get sidetracked or you procrastinate, which happens all the time in my life, it’s an absolute mess. And if I do get to all the washing, I get burned out on putting away which then means clean stacks of clothes sit there. And then get moved around. And then get on the floor. And are then considered dirty because they get mixed in with other actual dirty clothes and the cycle starts all over again.
• COMPLETE AN ASSIGNED NUMBER OF LOADS EACH DAY FROM START TO FINISH AND KEEP IT CONSISTENT. I plan two loads of laundry every single day – one at the beginning of my day before I get into my studio and one at the end of the day. If for some reason I cannot get to putt the laundry away when I pull it from the dryer, I make sure to put the load of clothes on my bed. Why? Because when I come upstairs at the end of the day, the load sitting there reminds me to put it away if I want to enjoy my bed – ha! Doing it this way also frees up my weekends so I am not bogged down with chores.
• SCHEDULE BEDDING ON YOUR CALENDAR. If I don’t see it on my calendar, I can completely forget about bedding with all that we have going on. So I add “wash bedding” to every other weekend on my calendar and this way I can stay on top of it and not forget about it.
