My All-Natural Laundry Detergent & Bleach Recipes

We have loved this simple switch in our home. Not to mention, the peace of mind that comes with knowing that the products we are using are plant-based and completely natural? There’s nothing better. I want to make sure our home is as safe as possible and that it is a place where we can cultivate true wellness. So today I wanted to share with you my all-natural laundry detergent and bleach recipes!

Once I discovered how unhealthy the laundry products sitting in my cupboard were, it was quickly one of my top priorities to switch out. Why? Because those unhealthy chemicals and ingredients were coating our clothes. And those clothes then go on our body which then comes in contact with our skin. And the thought of that was enough for me to want to clean up our act. Especially since we had already started ditching chemicals and toxic ingredients in other areas of our home and lifestyle.

So what is it exactly that is so harmful? Well, I believe that knowledge is power and when we learn more about this we can start to do better.

Here is just a glimpse into this particular rabbit hole:

Our skin is our largest organ. This means that whatever we put on it can also be absorbed into our bloodstream. Ever wonder why we have such an uptick in chronic illness here in the United States? Perhaps it has everything to do with the constant exposure to chemicals. Whether they are absorbed through our skin, inhaled, or digested, that is a lot of chemicals compounding in our systems over time.

That smell that we love so much in our products? Who knew it was so harmful to our health. Have you ever looked at the ingredient list on one of your laundry products? Have you ever noticed that “fragrance” is a listed ingredient? Very interesting since “fragrance” isn’t a single compound or ingredient. It is a combination of things. ‘Fragrance’ can actually be made up of 4,000 additional chemicals that you aren’t even aware of. It’s why our family kicked synthetic fragrance to the curb last year.

Did you know sodium percarbonate is one of the major components of laundry detergents as well as dish detergents? Did you also know it is classified as a poisonous agent?

Think about all that we wash with laundry detergent. Our clothing, our bedding, even those masks people are wearing. So it’s no surprise that studies have linked issues like asthma, allergies, and other respiratory ailments to those chemicals that are inhaled constantly.

Frightening information? Just a bit, but the good news is that with a little bit of time we can truly make our homes a haven. And with baby steps, we can kick all of the unhealthy and toxic junk out the front door. When we know better, we can do better.

Wool Dryer Balls

Alright, let’s start with the very first baby step you can make – one that is inexpensive and that your budget will thank you for!

Those darn dryer sheets need the boot. Replacing them with wool dryer balls will be the easiest thing you ever did! Not only are they less expensive lasting for over 1,000 loads, but they are incredibly inexpensive.

I love adding drops of a favorite essential oil on my wool dryer balls for an added natural scent. And two tips to help reduce the static you might be concerned about? Number one, make sure to air dry all clothing that is made of materials that are known to cause static such as mesh shorts and jerseys or the dry-fit type of materials. Second, don’t over-dry your loads. As soon as they are dry, pull your load from the dryer instead of letting them tumble longer.

I make sure and link all of my wellness finds over on my Amazon affiliate page and you can get the same ones I purchase right here.

Laundry Detergent

Thank goodness for the Thieves line from Young Living! Why? Because it makes going all-natural so incredibly easy. I mean, the household cleaner concentrate alone allowed me to toss every harmful cleaning product in my home. It’s truly been amazing. Not to mention the products are highly concentrated which means we can dilute with water to push them farther.

For my laundry detergent recipe:

I simply combine one entire bottle of laundry soap along with the same amount of water. I then add 1/4 cup of Thieves household cleaner to amp up the cleaning power a bit. This will make 64 ounces total. To fill my entire gallon jug I simply double this to fill it up as much as I can. I will then add 1/4 cup to the wash.

Homemade Bleach

No one likes dingey whites, am I right? This homemade bleach recipe is not only so much healthier but also helps to get the job done in this area. The ingredients you will need are hydrogen peroxide, baking soda, Thieves cleaner concentrate, a lemon, water, and lemon essential oil.

For my homemade bleach recipe:

Combine 3/4 cup hydrogen peroxide, 3/4 cup baking soda, 1/4 cup Thieves cleaner, 1/4 cup lemon juice, 7 cups of water, and 15 drops of lemon essential oil. To fill my entire gallon jug, I will simply repeat that recipe until I have it at the desired amount. I then will add 1 cup to the wash.

And I upgraded the size of my bottles simply so that I wasn’t refilling all of the time. I mean, a household of seven people – it’s a lot of laundry! I found these glass gallon jugs on Amazon right here. You can also get them in half-gallon sizes and they even have pump tops that you can buy as well if you prefer that way of dispensing.

Just a little bit of my time to refill when we need to, but well worth the benefits of having an all-natural laundry solution!

Of course, I had to include my printable labels for you to enjoy as well! These are 4×4 inches and sized to appropriately fit the gallon-size jug.
